When you live in different time zones, a live video date is not always possible. These twelve ideas work at different times: each of you does your part when it suits you, then you share. They cover food, music, walks, questions and letters, with a simple way to plan around the gap.

How do you plan around a time-zone gap?

  1. Find your overlapWrite down the hours when you are both awake and free, even if it is only twenty minutes.
  2. Set a standing timeUse the same slot each week for a live call.
  3. Fill the rest with apart datesThe ideas below fill the days you cannot talk live.

What are twelve date ideas that work at different times?

  1. Answer a question, then compare. Each of you answers the same question on your own, then swap answers. Try the set in Questions for couples.
  2. The same recipe, two kitchens. Cook it in your own time and send each other a photo of the result.
  3. A shared playlist. Add one song a day with a line on why you picked it.
  4. The same walk, a day apart. Walk, then send a voice note about what you saw.
  5. Letters. Write a short one each week. A handwritten one in the post makes a good surprise.
  6. One episode each. Watch the same show on your own, then send your reactions.
  7. A photo scavenger hunt. Agree a list of ten things, such as “something blue” or “your view at noon”, and share what you each find.
  8. A shared photo album. Add one picture a day of an ordinary moment.
  9. A voice note of the day. Two minutes, no editing, about how the day went.
  10. The same book, a chapter at a time. Read a chapter each and send one line about it.
  11. Plan a trip together. Build a shared list of places and things you would do when you next meet.
  12. Open-when notes. Write short notes marked “open when you miss me” or “open on a hard day”, and mail them.

Can you still have a live date?

Yes. Use your overlap window for a call and keep it simple: a meal, a walk with your phones, or the check-in format from A couples’ weekly check-in. Save apart dates for the other days, so a missed call does not mean a missed connection.

Where does Eterna fit?

Eterna is built for answering at different times: The Reveal waits until you have both answered, so you never need to be online together. It is an iPhone app, and Book 1 is free.

Frequently asked questions

How do you do a date night in different time zones?

Pick an activity where you each do your part at your own time, such as cooking the same recipe or answering the same question, and then share what you did by photo, voice note or message.

How often should long-distance couples talk?

There is no right number. Agree a rhythm that works for both of you and check it every few weeks. Some couples prefer short daily messages and one longer call a week.

What if one of us is asleep when the other is free?

Use messages and voice notes that the other can enjoy when they wake up, and protect one overlap window each week for a live call.

Do we need an app to do these?

No. Every idea above works with a phone and a messaging app.

What if the time gap changes with daylight saving time?

Check your overlap again when the clocks change, because the gap can shift by an hour. Put a reminder in your calendar for the days before the change.

Eterna does the hiding and the showing for you.

Your partner can’t see your answer until you’ve both answered. Then The Reveal shows them side by side.
