For busy couples
How to stay connected when life is busy

Busy couples stay close with small habits, not big plans. A five-minute check-in, one question a day, a message that says you were thinking of them, and one protected evening a week often do more than a long date that never happens. Here are ten that fit a full week.
Why does staying close get harder when you are busy?
Because the time that used to happen by itself now has to be chosen. When work, family and errands fill the week, most talk shrinks to logistics: who is picking up, what is for dinner, what is on tomorrow. Nothing is wrong when that happens. It is a scheduling problem, and it has scheduling answers.
What are ten small habits for busy couples?
- A five-minute check-in at night. Phones away. Each of you shares one good thing and one hard thing from today.
- One question a day. Pick a question for the week. Each of you answers on your own, then you compare over dinner or by text.
- A message that is not logistics. One text a day that is not about plans: a photo, a memory, a line that says you were thinking of them.
- A short weekly plan. Fifteen minutes to look at the week ahead: who needs what, and which evenings are protected.
- One protected evening. One evening a week with nothing booked. Cancel it only for real emergencies.
- Thanks for the ordinary things. Name one specific thing your partner did today, even if it was small.
- Errands as time together. Do the grocery run or the walk after dinner together, and keep the phones in your pockets.
- A good first two minutes. When you meet again at the end of the day, hug, ask how it went, and wait before checking your phone.
- One small daily ritual. A coffee in the morning, a phrase at night. The smaller it is, the easier it is to keep.
- Say no to one thing. Drop one commitment that crowds the week. The time you get back is time you can share.

- Keep it smallFive minutes counts.
- Hold it for two weeksThen add a second one.
What are five questions for a five-minute check-in?
Each of you can answer these on your own first, in a sentence, and then share.
-
01
What was the best part of your day?
-
02
What was the hardest part?
-
03
Is there anything you need from me this week?
-
04
What is one thing coming up that you are looking forward to?
-
05
What is one small thing I did lately that you noticed?
What if we are in different places or on different schedules?
Change the habit, not the goal. Swap the shared evening for a call or a voice note. Answer the daily question at your own times and compare when you both have a minute. If one of you works nights, pick a different part of the day to protect, such as the first hour after you both wake up.
Where does Eterna fit?
Eterna is an iPhone app that gives each of you five questions per Chapter to answer on your own, then shows both answers side by side. You could use one Chapter as your questions for the week. Book 1 is free. You can also try a set of questions on paper: see Questions for couples.
Frequently asked questions
How much time do couples need to stay connected?
There is no right number. Short, regular moments are usually easier to keep than long ones that rarely happen. Five minutes a day is a workable place to start, and a protected evening each week gives you room for more.
What if one of us wants more time together than the other?
That is common, and it is not a fault in either person. Say what you each want in plain numbers, such as “two evenings a week”, try a middle plan for two weeks, and talk again.
Do we need a date night every week?
No. A date night is one way to spend time together. A daily check-in, a shared walk or a standing meal can do the same job with less planning.
What makes a good question for a daily check-in?
Short, specific and easy to answer in a line, such as “What was the best part of your day?” or “What is one thing you need this week?”
Can we do this long distance?
Yes. Swap the shared evening for a call or a voice note, and answer the daily question at your own times before you compare.
